Sleeptember History

Sleeptember® is a program of the American Sleep Apnea Association (ASAA) and it’s partners. Founded in 1990, the ASAA is the nation’s leading patient-led advocacy group in the sleep medicine field and has been at the forefront of trying to help increase awareness and education related to sleep apnea. Having recently transitioned to a completely patient-led organization in and participating in the historic national research endeavor called The National Patient-Centered Clinical Research Network (PCORnet), funded by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), members of the ASAA and other partners realized that people facing chronic and rare health conditions have more in common that they do differences.

All people need support, information, hope, and good sleep to give the energy to help them face daily health challenges head on and seek better research and answers to the questions they have.

The majority of people with sleep disorders are still undiagnosed and untreated; however, we believe that many are being treated for common associated diseases and conditions such as heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, afib, obesity, mental health, workplace accidents, motor vehicle crashes, and early death. We believe that if you improve sleep, you improve your overall health and can control or better manage some of these conditions.

All patients have a story to tell and through sharing, we all get stronger and control our own fate. Become a Sleeptember Member now.
